What is a Designated Substance Survey (DSS)?

Before a renovation or a demolition of a building structure, The Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, requires building owners perform due diligence to identify the presence of hazardous materials with a Designated Substance Survey (DSS). Suspected materials based on a surveyors knowledge of materials used to construct the building are searched for and identified in all accessible areas. Substances of interest and identification in a DSS are:

  • Arsenic (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 836)
  • Asbestos (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 837 and R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 838)
  • Benzene (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 839)
  • Coke Oven Emissions (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 840)
  • Ethylene Oxide (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 841)
  • Isocyanates (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 842)
  • Lead (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 843) Mercury (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 844)
  • Silica (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 845)
